Blizzards and Social Media

Hello there my wonderful family and friends!

This week was pretty great! We don’t have tons of time left so let me wrap my brain around all of this and tell you about this great week!

This week, it snowed A LOT! Like a lot a lot. It was crazy. On the days that it wasn’t snowing, the wind chill was about -25 degrees. People keep telling us to go inside and stay warm. Hah! If only you knew…sometimes I do want to stay in, but we must be doing the Lords work!

DSCN0806[1]

The snow is kinda nice though because we are able to take our shovels out with us and we are able to help a lot of people shovel their driveways and sidewalks. It is a great finding tool. We have been praying really hard this week that it would stop snowing and that all of it would go to Utah, because last we both heard, Utah really needs it. I have found out from my emails today that at least Orem got some snow! Not sure about everywhere else, but at least Utah is getting a little bit of it. 🙂

This week we had a couple of awesome lessons with our investigator (R). I mentioned her once or twice before, but she is our Wicca investigator. She has been reading the Book of Mormon and is already in 2 Nephi. Her son has also been reading (even though we haven’t been able to pick him up as an investigator…he is never home when we go over). They talk about it with each other. Right now, (R) feels pretty good about the church. We were at a point where she was wanting to combine our religion with Wicca. She recognizes that there are “holes” in Wicca but she loves that religion. She recognizes that what we have to offer is really good, and that is why she wanted to combine it. That way, she would be able to keep her religion but fill up the holes.

Anyway, that can’t happen! Sister Rose and I didn’t know what to do. We knew that we would have to bring it up to her at some point, but we didn’t want to hurt her feelings or anything. We were praying and praying to know what to do. This week, we had one of the members come out with us that we felt prompted should come. She came and was PERFECT! The lesson went so great! This member was able to teach and help (R) understand that she can’t do that. We were then able to add to the things she was saying.

The next lesson that we had with (R) after that was really similar. She still mentioned something about combining the two. I said a prayer in my heart that we would be able to teach boldly and in a loving way so that we wouldn’t hurt her feelings, but that we would be able to help her progress more. The spirit was so strong! I felt like I taught very boldly. I had a surge go through me and I was able to say the things that needed to be said. Sister Rose was able to add her testimony, as well as the member that was with us for that lesson. It was awesome! We are having a chapel tour with (R) this week, so hopefully we will be able to get her to come to church on Sunday!!

We didn’t see (B) this week….bummer! We are having a hard time getting a hold of him. He is staying with his father in-law right now and we think that he is getting ready to have his surgery that he was supposed to have last month. We just keep praying for him and pray that he will continue to read. At the rate he was going though, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time we saw him, he was finished with the Book of Mormon. Who knows!

Saturday we had our Social Media split. We were going to go up to the church in the morning to help out with the family history jamboree that was going on, but it was snowing so bad our car wasn’t even making it up this one road by our apartment. It is a little bit of a hill, and I almost had to get out and push us. Yeah…we turned around and went home. We had to go to the store to get some chocolate chips though so that we could make some cookies later that morning. There is a gas station really close to our apartment, and there was no way that we were going to drive to an actual grocery store, so we grabbed our shovels and shoveled our way to the gas station. We thought we would be helpful and help plow a path on the sidewalk. Haha! It ended up being a really good day.

We had a few different members come out with us and take pictures, and we didn’t die on the roads! It finally stopped snowing around 4:00 in the afternoon and the plows were able to catch up and get the roads all cleaned off, so we were able to go out driving that night. It was a good day and a great week! If you have not seen pictures of the Social Media split and would like to, look up #mormon and #socialmediasplit. You should be able to see pictures of all the missionaries by doing that.

Anyway, I love you all, as always! Have a great week! By the way, this is that last week of the transfer. Say what?? Yes, it is. We are going to end this transfer with a bang! 🙂

Love,

Sister Palmer

Can You Feel the Love Tonight??

** No this is not a Disney sing-a-long, Lion King-esque story…

Hey family and friends!

Happy belated Valentine’s Day! I hope it was a great day for all of you. 🙂

So let me tell you about the week…

Monday last week, we had a shorter p-day because we had gone to the temple on Saturday (two days before…see the previous post). That’s okay though because that gave us lots of time to go out and work and see people! Yay. 🙂 We finally got to see our investigator (B). He is still doing awesome. We saw him a few different times this week. Since the last time that we saw him, he is now on date for the 14th of March. He is also in Alma chapter 55 of the Book of Mormon (as of Friday). I have never had an investigator read that much of the Book of Mormon before they got baptized. That is just crazy!!! He is pretty awesome. 🙂

Wednesday we had a Relief Society activity. Sister Rose and I weren’t going to go because we didn’t have an investigator or a less active member going, but then one of the members told us that she had invited a non-member friend and asked us to come. It ended up being pretty good! We had a lot of fun and I was able to see a couple of members from the Middletown ward and they gave me a few updates on what was going on down there. It was nice to get an update. 🙂

Friday we had exchanges. I was here in Miamisburg with Sister Summers!! We always have the best time on exchanges. She goes home at the end of this transfer, so that was the last time that I will get to be on exchanges with her, but we made it lots of fun. Thankfully she isn’t “trunky”, which is a good thing. While we were on exchanges, we saw our investigator (A), who we haven’t seen quite as much as we would like. (A) has a really good friend who is LDS and she has known her for about 20 years or so. She also was getting taught by missionaries last year. Anyway, Sister Rose and I picked her up as an investigator again about a month ago. Sister Summers and I had a really powerful lesson with her! We were able to talk about a couple things (like why she didn’t get baptized last year). The spirit was really strong and by the end of the lesson, we had extended a baptism date for March 21st. March is going to be a great month!! We will see if I am still in Miamisburg though.

Saturday was Valentine’s Day. It was also Sister Rose’s birthday. We had a really good day! We had a meeting in the morning with the Elders. During lunch we came home and ate some food while Sister Rose opened her presents. That night we had some members feed us, and they had heard it was Sister Rose’s birthday, so they made some really yummy food and got a delicious cake! We sang Happy Birthday to her and had a good time. Overall, it was a really good day. 🙂

Today it is snowing.

That sucks. I hate driving in the snow…it is no fun.

So this past week we got a few different voicemails from President and Sister Porter. They were talking about all of the great things that are happening in the mission right now! They posted our baptism recap video on a Facebook page for the missionaries who have already gone home. Sister Porter read a couple of the posts from some of the previous missionaries who commented on the video. It made me feel good! I am so happy to be a part of the OCM (Ohio Cincinnati Mission) right now! There are so many good things going on. We have set some pretty high goals, but we are working super hard to achieve them! It is all part of leaving a legacy behind.

So there is my update! I love you all so much! Have a great week.

Road Trips and Temples :)

Hello my wonderful family and friends!

Hows y’all doing?? Things are going pretty great for me right now. This last week was kinda bleh, except for one thing which I will mention in just a minute.

So we had a couple of appointments on Monday, but they ended up cancelling because people were sick…being sick is not fun! I was glad that people were mindful of us, but I was also disappointed that our appointments cancelled.

There wasn’t a whole ton that happened on Tuesday either. We were going to go to one of the member’s houses to read to her mom who was on hospice (spelling?) but she ended up passing away over the weekend and the viewing was on Tuesday in a part of Ohio that the lady grew up in, and it was out of mission boundaries, so we couldn’t go to it.

Wednesday we had zone meeting, which went really good! We had a lot of fun. Played a game, but then also had some training. I took a lot of good notes that will hopefully help continue to grow and progress in my missionary work. That afternoon though, I was not at the top of my game. We were staying too long at appointments (I like to visit with people, but usually I do good and keep it to a minimum). I almost forgot about one of our appointments. We still made it, but we were late. We did have a correlation meeting with our Ward mission leaders and the elders that night, so that was good at least! Also on Wednesday, we had a few appointments scheduled and a member to come out with us, but no one was home for their appointments…the frustrations of missionary work.

Thursday was very slow too. Basically the whole week I felt like I was walking through sand. In my head I wanted to work super hard, but my effort wasn’t as great, and then our numbers were not good. This was the worst week of numbers that I have had my entire mission. I know that the numbers don’t matter as much. I am proud of Sister Rose and me because we did work really hard! We just faced some opposition, which for a missionary that is normal. This week is going to be a good week! The past is behind us, and we are going to do better than last week and accomplish a lot more. 🙂

Okay, enough of the sadder, negative stuff. Let me get to the good part. So if you noticed I included temples in the heading of my email. So let me tell you about it…

On the first and third Saturdays of the month, we get to go to the temple with our recent converts. Our zone and the zones that are south of us go to the Louisville Kentucky temple on the first Saturday of the month, and everyone north of our zone goes to the Columbus temple on the third Saturday of the month. At the beginning of the week we weren’t planning on going to the temple, but our zone leaders had called us on Tuesday to get a little bit of information and they committed us to try and get someone to the temple on Saturday. Not gonna lie, I really doubted it would happen. I pretty much told myself that I would try, but I wasn’t going to get too upset if it didn’t happen. (I know…where was my faith?!) Anyway, we went to work to try and accomplish it. The zone leaders told us we could do it, and President Porter is really pushing for every area to take a recent convert to the temple every month.

We decided to take (L). We saw her every day! We began by getting her set up on FamilySearch and helping her find names. Then on Thursday, we called the Bishop to see if he could do a temple recommend interview with her. He said he was available that night, so we prayed that she would be able to do it. Guess what? She was able to do it! 🙂

By Friday we had still not found a ride. We prayed and prayed and asked lots of the members if they could take us. We finally found a member to take us. Thank heavens! We went over on Friday to see (L) and finalize everything.

Then the big day arrived! We left Miamisburg at about 9:30-ish and began our trip down to Louisville. It is about 2-21/2 hours from us. I haven’t been on that long of a car ride since I was in Indiana. Everything in Ohio is a lot closer, and so I haven’t had to.

Things ended up going so good! (L) was able to do baptisms for her mom and her grandma. It was a neat experience for her. There were a lot of missionaries and a lot of recent converts. President Porter did a lot of the baptisms.

Louisville Temple Trip A 02-07-15

Toward the end, when almost all of the recent converts were done, we were told that some of us sisters could do baptisms too! I was so excited. I don’t remember the last time that I did baptisms. We went and got changed. President Porter was the one that did the baptisms for all of us, so that was a neat opportunity. I was the first one to do the baptisms, and after President was finished and as I was getting out of the font, he told me that I had just done the baptisms for his family; family names that he and Sister Porter had brought to the temple. It was so awesome!

Anyway, that was the highlight of the weekend. It made everything a little bit better. 🙂 I love you all! Thanks for all you do. Have a great week!

Sister Palmer

Some adorable cookies that Laura made for us! 🙂

Shadows and Shades….

Hello family and friends!

Okay, I know the title of this email is really lame…I didn’t know what to put. But today is GROUNDHOG DAY!! That’s right. We walked outside this morning and weren’t able to see our shadows, so hopefully it is the same for the groundhog. I would just like spring to be on its way! This winter has been a lot better than last year’s winter, and I mean A LOT! But just because it is better doesn’t mean that it isn’t so bitter cold! It has still been pretty cold out here which isn’t fun.

So this week was another great week! Tuesday we had exchanges. I got to go to Springboro and Sister Rose stayed in our area with Sister Summers. It was a lot of fun! I enjoyed being with sister Burton. It was a little bit of a hard day. We didn’t see very many people or have very many lessons, but it was still good. It was Sister Burton’s first exchange as a sister training leader, and she had only been in the area for a week, so it was an adventure!!

Can you believe it is already February?? Just had to point that out….

This week there wasn’t anything super crazy that happened. Sister Summers and Rose had a great exchange her in our area, and they were finally able to contact a referral that we got from (L)…(our recent convert). The referral was for her cousin who lives just down the street from her. Anyway, they were able to contact that family and pick them up as new investigators! We have an appointment with them tomorrow! #teachingfamilies

Thursday we had Zone Conference. That was so great!!

10947171_754880971262391_8426830065092100073_n

It was very similar to the legacy meeting, because now everyone was there to hear the goals that we set and the plans that we made at the legacy meeting.

1508187_754879591262529_19454152615307100_n

There were a lot of neat things that I learned and revelation that I received. Plus it was great to be with President and Sister Porter (hopefully you enjoyed the pictures she posted on Facebook of it!). Also, we have this thing at Zone Conference where whoever has the cleanest car gets extra miles. They do a first place and a second place award. This time, there were two sets of missionaries that tied for second place on the clean car award: It was us and the Miamisburg elders! And then, the Kettering sisters won first place for the cleanest car. So that makes up our whole district. Our district one the awards for the cleanest car! #districtunity

Like the hashtags?? Too bad if you don’t. Haha!

This month we are having competitions every week as a mission and there are prizes for each zone that wins the competitions. This week is the competition is for the zone who finds the most new investigators. I am very competitive and I am determined to win! Sister Rose and I have been going through the area book and looking at our former investigators and potential investigators. We are going to be doing all we can to find new investigators this week!

Anyway, that is a little update for the week! Thanks again for all the love and support! I hope you all have a great week!

Love,

Sister Palmer
